Dr. Issaka served as clinical lead for colorectal cancer screening for the Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho - Region Practice Transformation Network's (WWAMI-PTN's) pilot study of mailed FIT outreach that led to 29% of Medicare patients past due for screening being screened.
Dr. Issaka served as co-investigator on a randomized control trial that determined that compared to usual care, population-based organized mailed fecal immunochemical tests (FITs) outreach significantly increased colorectal cancer screening participation and was cost-effective in a safety-net system.
Dr. Issaka served as lead investigator on a retrospective cohort study that revealed that almost 50% of patients with an abnormal FIT result and a poor bowel prep at index colonoscopy never returned for a repeat procedure. Since these patients who undergo colonoscopy with an inadequate bowel preparation are invisible when queried by the panel management and have a higher risk of colorectal cancer, the study recommended specific actions to minimize loss to follow-up from this cohort.
